THE TRUTH ABOUT TESTING AND HORSEPOWER CLAIMS FOR COLD AIR INTAKE FILTERS

In the market for a cold air intake system for your car or truck?

If you’re in the market for a cold air intake system for your car or truck, the number of choices out there can leave your head spinning. To make things worse, the claims of horsepower and torque gains can vary greatly and, in some cases, be very misleading. At Cold Air Inductions, we believe in the No Lies approach to advertising how our systems perform. Here are a few things you should know and consider when comparing power gains while shopping for your next cold air intake system.

FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does the manufacturer show you the specific power and torque curves for their cold air intake kits on the model of vehicle you’re shopping for? Or is it a generic curve or power gain that they claim across multiple systems and multiple vehicles? Cold Air Inductions uses a chassis dyno (in addition to a state-of-the-art flow bench and computer simulation) to develop every system. This measures power at the tires, taking into consideration all the variables in a vehicle and drivetrain that you will have in your vehicle.

2. Is the system tested in “closed position,” the same way it will be when you drive your car or truck? All Cold Air Inductions kits are designed as closed systems. This means that we don’t use the top of the hood to seal our air boxes. We think this is more precise for air and heat control, but it also makes a big difference in claimed power numbers. You don’t drive down the street with your hood open, do you?

3. Not all dynos are equal. Or more to the point, you can’t compare power numbers generated on two different dynos. There are correction factors that professional dyno facilities are supposed to use to make them comparable, but the reality is that there are just too many variables between facilities, equipment and operators. So when you shop for a cold air intake – and you’re sure that the power curve you’re looking at is actually for the vehicle you have – look at the difference in power between before and after, not just the peak power with the system installed.
